What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Visit
If you've never been to a chiropractor before, you probably have some questions. Maybe some hesitation. That's completely normal. Let's walk through exactly what your first visit at McNamara Chiropractic Center looks like — so you can come in feeling prepared, not anxious.
Before You Arrive
We'll have some intake paperwork for you — either to complete digitally ahead of time or when you arrive. This covers your health history, current symptoms, any previous injuries or conditions, and what brought you in. The more detail you provide, the more productive your first appointment will be.
Wear comfortable clothing. If you're being evaluated for back or hip pain, clothing that allows easy access to the spine is helpful (athletic wear works well).
The Consultation
Your first visit begins with a conversation. We want to understand your problem from your perspective:
- Where is the pain? When did it start?
- What makes it better or worse?
- Have you had treatment for this before?
- What are you hoping to achieve with care?
This isn't a quick checkbox exercise — we actually listen. Understanding your history is essential to making sense of what's happening in your body.
The Examination
After your consultation, we conduct a thorough physical examination. Depending on your complaint, this typically includes:
- Postural assessment — how you stand, any visible imbalances
- Range of motion testing — how far you can move the affected area
- Orthopedic tests — specific provocation tests to identify what structure is involved
- Neurological screening — reflexes, sensation, and muscle strength when nerve involvement is possible
- Spinal palpation — feeling for joint restrictions, muscle tension, and areas of tenderness
We may also take X-rays if they're clinically indicated and will help guide your care.
The Report of Findings
After the exam, we explain what we found. This is your opportunity to ask every question you have. We'll tell you:
- What we think is causing your pain
- What treatment we recommend and why
- How long recovery typically takes
- What we expect to happen in the first few weeks
You should leave your first visit understanding your condition clearly. If something doesn't make sense, ask us to explain it differently.
Will I Get Treated on the First Visit?
In most cases, yes — we can often begin treatment on your initial appointment. This typically involves chiropractic adjustments to areas of joint restriction. We'll always tell you what we're about to do and get your agreement before proceeding.
The adjustment itself involves a controlled, specific thrust to a joint. Many patients hear a "pop" — that's just gas releasing from the joint space, similar to cracking your knuckles. It's not bones breaking, and it's not painful for most people.
After Your First Adjustment
It's common to feel some mild soreness in the treated areas for 24–48 hours after your first adjustment — similar to how you feel after a new workout. This is normal and resolves quickly. Many patients also notice immediate improvement in pain or mobility.
Chiropractic care works best as a series of visits, not a one-time fix. Your chiropractor will recommend a care plan based on your specific situation.
