Spinal Decompression Therapy in Lighthouse Point, FL
Spinal decompression therapy is a non-surgical treatment for disc-related spine conditions that works by mechanically reducing pressure within the spinal discs. At McNamara Chiropractic Center, Dr. Carol McNamara Krauss uses the Antalgic-Trac® system — a computerized decompression device that delivers precise, angle-specific distraction to targeted spinal segments.
This page explains how spinal decompression works. If you're ready to start the full program, see the Spinal Decompression Program.
The Mechanism: Why Disc Pressure Matters
Adult spinal discs are avascular — they have no direct blood supply. The disc survives by absorbing nutrients and water through a diffusion process called imbibition: when load is removed, fluid (and nutrients) flows into the disc; when load is applied, fluid is squeezed out.
In herniated or degenerated discs, this exchange is compromised. The disc is under constant load — from posture, gravity, and muscle tension. Without the relief that comes from proper decompression, the disc can't heal.
Non-surgical spinal decompression creates therapeutic negative pressure within the disc through controlled mechanical distraction. The effects:
- Intradiscal pressure reduction — Negative pressure draws fluid and nutrients into the disc
- Disc retraction — For herniations, the negative pressure creates a retraction force on protruded disc material
- Nerve root decompression — As disc material retracts, pressure on compressed nerve roots decreases
- Healing environment — Improved nutrient exchange allows disc tissue to begin repairing
The Antalgic-Trac® System
The Antalgic-Trac® is distinct from generic traction tables in several important ways:
- Angle-specific distraction — The angle of pull is calibrated to target specific disc levels
- Computerized tension control — Precise, reproducible tension settings at each session
- Variable tension cycling — Alternating tension and rest cycles that promote nutrient exchange without triggering muscle guarding
These distinctions aren't marketing language — they reflect genuine clinical differences that affect outcomes.
Conditions Addressed by Spinal Decompression
- Herniated disc (lumbar and cervical)
- Degenerative disc disease
- Sciatica from disc-related nerve compression
- Stenosis — canal or foraminal narrowing
- Post-surgical back pain (many presentations)
- Chronic low back and neck pain of disc origin
Spinal Decompression as Part of a Complete Program
At this practice, spinal decompression is never used in isolation. The full Spinal Decompression Program combines Antalgic-Trac® with Class IV laser therapy and shockwave therapy for comprehensive treatment that addresses the disc, the surrounding tissue, and the neurological irritation simultaneously.
FAQs
How is this different from a chiropractor just adjusting my back? Chiropractic adjustments restore joint mobility and segmental function. Spinal decompression specifically reduces intradiscal pressure and promotes disc healing. They're complementary but mechanically distinct.
Who is not a candidate? Fracture, severe osteoporosis, spinal instability, certain post-surgical conditions, and active tumors are contraindications. Dr. McNamara screens all patients appropriately.
