Symptoms of Whiplash: What to Watch for After a Car Accident

You walked away from the accident feeling okay. Maybe a little shaken, but nothing that seemed serious. Then two days later, your neck is stiff, your head is pounding, and you're struggling to turn to check your blind spot.

This is one of the most important things to understand about whiplash: the worst symptoms often appear 24 to 72 hours after the accident. Feeling fine immediately afterward does not mean you're uninjured.

What Is Whiplash?

Whiplash is a soft tissue injury to the neck caused by the rapid back-and-forth motion of the head during a collision — even a low-speed one. The muscles, ligaments, and discs of the cervical spine can be strained or damaged even when the car shows little damage.

Common Whiplash Symptoms

Neck pain and stiffness — The most obvious symptom. It may be localized to one area or spread across the entire neck and upper back.

Headaches — Typically starting at the base of the skull and radiating forward. Whiplash headaches are often described as dull, pressure-like, or throbbing.

Shoulder and upper back pain — The force of impact doesn't stop at the neck. Muscles and joints in the shoulders and upper back are commonly involved.

Jaw pain (TMJ) — Many accident victims develop jaw pain or difficulty chewing after whiplash, because the impact affects the temporomandibular joint.

Dizziness and balance problems — The cervical spine plays a critical role in balance. Injury here can cause persistent dizziness, especially with head movement.

Cognitive symptoms ("brain fog") — Difficulty concentrating, memory problems, and fatigue are common and often distressing for patients who didn't expect these symptoms.

Arm numbness or tingling — If a disc or nerve in the neck was affected, you may experience these sensations radiating into the arm.

Sleep disturbances — Pain and discomfort from whiplash frequently disrupts sleep, which slows recovery.

Why You Shouldn't Wait to Get Checked

In Florida, you have 14 days after an accident to seek treatment and preserve your Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance benefits. Beyond the insurance consideration, early treatment leads to significantly better outcomes. Untreated whiplash can become chronic — with some patients experiencing symptoms for years.

At McNamara Chiropractic Center, we specialize in auto accident injury treatment. We document your injuries thoroughly, which supports your PIP claim and any legal case you may have.

Our guide to car accident injury recovery covers everything from what to do at the scene to what your recovery looks like.

Treating Whiplash

We address whiplash with a combination of chiropractic adjustments to restore cervical alignment, soft tissue therapy to address muscle spasm and ligament damage, and Class 4 Laser Therapy to reduce inflammation and accelerate healing in damaged soft tissue.

Don't assume you're fine just because you feel okay at first. Get checked.
