Knee Pain in Seniors: What's Normal, What's Not, and What Helps

A lot of older adults assume knee pain is just part of getting older — something to manage, not fix. We hear that all the time at our Lighthouse Point office, and we respectfully disagree. While some changes in the knee joint do happen with age, significant pain, stiffness, and loss of function are not things you simply have to accept.

What Causes Knee Pain in Older Adults?

Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of knee pain in people over 50. It's a degenerative condition where the cartilage that cushions the joint wears down over time, leading to bone-on-bone friction, inflammation, and stiffness. But here's something important: the amount of arthritis visible on an X-ray doesn't always predict how much pain someone is in. Plenty of people have significant arthritis on imaging but minimal pain — and vice versa. That means treatment isn't just about the joint itself.

Meniscus degeneration is another common issue. The menisci naturally become more brittle and prone to tears as we age, even without a traumatic injury. A "degenerative meniscus tear" can happen from something as simple as getting up from a chair.

Weakness and muscle imbalance play a huge role that often gets overlooked. When the muscles supporting the knee — particularly the quads, hamstrings, and glutes — weaken over time, the joint takes more direct load. This accelerates wear and worsens pain.

Bursitis and tendinitis are also common, causing localized tenderness around specific parts of the knee.

What's Not Normal

Knee pain that interferes with daily life is not something you should just accept. These symptoms deserve professional attention:

  • Pain that limits walking more than a few blocks
  • Stiffness that takes more than 30 minutes to loosen up in the morning
  • Swelling that comes and goes
  • Needing to hold a railing just to go up stairs
  • Avoiding activities you used to enjoy because of knee pain

Non-Surgical Options That Work

Many seniors are told their only option is knee replacement surgery. That's often not true, and surgery carries significant risks for older adults. There are highly effective conservative treatments worth trying first.

Our Knee Restoration Program was built with patients like you in mind. We use gentle chiropractic techniques appropriate for older joints, combined with targeted strengthening exercises, soft tissue therapy, and advanced therapies like Class 4 Laser Therapy — which reduces inflammation without any medication or needles.

Shockwave Therapy is another excellent option for chronic tendon-related knee pain, stimulating the body's natural healing response.

The goal is to restore as much function and quality of life as possible — so you can keep playing golf, going for walks, and doing the things you love.
