Knee Pain from Golf: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

If your knees are aching after a round of golf, you're not alone. South Florida has some of the best courses in the country, and a lot of our patients here in Lighthouse Point play year-round. That's great for your game — but it does put repeated stress on your knees in ways most golfers never think about until something starts hurting.

Why Golf Is Hard on Your Knees

Golf looks like a low-impact sport, but your knees take a serious beating during a swing. Every time you rotate through impact, your lead knee absorbs a significant rotational force. Over 18 holes — with 70 or 80 swings — that adds up fast.

The most common culprits behind golf-related knee pain:

  • Medial knee strain — the inner knee takes the brunt of weight transfer during the downswing
  • Meniscus irritation — the cartilage pads in your knee don't love repetitive twisting
  • IT band tightness — this runs along the outside of your thigh and knee, and gets inflamed from walking uneven terrain
  • Patellar tendon stress — especially when walking hilly courses or carrying a bag

Walking 18 holes is actually harder on your knees than riding in a cart, particularly on courses with elevation changes. Add in shoes without proper support, and you've got a recipe for knee pain that builds over time.

Warning Signs You Shouldn't Ignore

Not all knee pain is the same. Some soreness after a long round is normal. But these signs suggest something more serious is going on:

  • Pain that starts during your swing, not just after
  • Swelling or a feeling of "fullness" in the joint
  • Clicking or popping with movement
  • Pain when climbing stairs or getting in and out of the car
  • Knee pain that wakes you up at night

If any of those sound familiar, it's worth getting checked out before the damage gets worse.

What We Can Do About It

At McNamara Chiropractic Center, we see a lot of golfers with knee pain — and most of them don't need surgery or injections. What they need is an accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan that actually addresses the root cause.

Our Knee Restoration Program is specifically designed for this. We combine chiropractic adjustments to restore proper joint mechanics, soft tissue work to release tight structures around the knee, and targeted rehab exercises that address the movement patterns causing the problem in the first place.

We also look at your hips and lower back. A lot of knee pain in golfers actually originates from hip restriction — when the hips don't rotate freely, the knee compensates. Fix the hips, and the knee often improves quickly.

If there's significant tissue damage or inflammation, we may recommend Class 4 Laser Therapy or Shockwave Therapy to speed healing.

Getting Back to Your Game

Most golfers respond really well to conservative care when they catch the problem early. We typically see significant improvement within 4–8 weeks, depending on how long the issue has been building.
